Detox your body….Detox your mind!

If you’ve had a busy holiday, I’m sure you’re ready for a detox.  I am!  And since it’s the first day of the new year, there’s no better time to think about your mind and your energy.  They say your gut is your second brain, and if your gut is cluttered with sugar, processed foods, and alcohol, your brain may be foggy too.  To achieve your new year’s resolutions, meditating on your goals can be easier if your gut is clean and healthy.

I have two energetic kids and have never been able to stay on a liquid detox, which many people I know like to do.  Instead, I take out a lot of foods that are hard on my stomach and liver, flush out my system with a lot of lemon water, and take dandelion root daily. Dandelion has been shown to improve liver function by removing toxins and re-establishing hydration and electrolyte balance. I prefer taking the Dandelion capsule instead of the tea because the dandelion capsule helps with cleaning out your colon.  Make sure you are not pregnant before taking dandelion root and take only the manufacturer’s suggested dosage. I also try to go to bed before 10:00, meditate before bed, and try to limit my TV and computer time.  It’s better to go to bed early and wake up early.

Detoxing the body

Here are some foods to avoid, and some foods to enjoy.  Also, try not to drink too many juices.  Instead, eat fruit and drink 6-8 glasses of lemon water a day!  I usually recommend 3-5 days on a detox.

Food to avoid:

  • Dairy
  • Meat
  • Caffeine
  • Refined sugar
  • Pasta
  • Bread or crackers
  • Any processed foods like bars, cereal, etc…

Foods to fill up on: 

  • Fresh fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Wild Fish
  • Whole grains like brown rice and oats

Detoxing the mind

This may be a bit harder for some.  When we harbor bad feelings like resentment, anger, and jealousy, those toxic emotions are affecting our body, doing harm to our internal organs.  Each organ in Chinese medicine is associated with an emotion.  If an emotion, even something like sadness, lingers for too long, the organ associated with it can be depleted. 

So, try to process those emotions that you know aren’t positive and fill yourself up with the emotions that make you feel good and make others feel good.  I know, easier said than done.  If you’re harboring anger at someone, try to be compassionate and feel sorry for that person who has done wrong to you.  They may not be in a good place so try to be thankful you are not in the same place as that person! 

Here are some tips to turning those bad emotions around. 

Let go of                Replace with

Sadness                 Gratuity

Anger                    Compassion

Fear                       Will power

Worry                    Happiness

Bitterness              Love!
